Project Examples

Just a small selection of the projects that we have delivered for our clients.

Here at EP Ecology, we have skills and expertise in a wide range of surveys and assessments for ecology in a wide range of fields, these include:

  • Transport (including road, rail and active travel);
  • Energy (generation and transport);
  • Construction and development (including re-development of existing properties and new built structures in both the commercial and residential sectors);
  • Quarrying;
  • Water (including water treatment and flood prevention);
  • Agriculture (including forestry);
  • Greenspace / conservation (including development of “nature networks” and other green infrastructure); and
  • Training.

Preliminary Ecological Appraisal, Isle of Arran

EP Ecology completed a preliminary ecological appraisal for a site on the Isle of Arran. Our client requested the survey to accompany a planning application to re-instate a quarry.

We undertook a field visit to the island to map phase 1 habitats and assess the suitability of habitats for protected and notable species. This was complemented with records of protected species and designated sites gathered online. Our ecologists delivered a detailed report to inform the client and Local Planning Authority of the ecological sensitivities and requirements identified for project progression.

Bat Survey, Dumfries & Galloway

EP Ecology was recently contacted by an individual in Dumfries and Galloway who was looking to undertake some internal renovations to his home. The Local Planning Authority had requested a bat survey report to help inform their consideration.

Our team delivered this project led by Erik. The Preliminary Roost Assessment identified low bat roosting potential so a single nocturnal survey was completed in line with Bat Conservation Trust guidance. Our survey identified a small soprano pipistrelle roost in another part of the building. We prepared a report for the client and the Local Planning Authority which detailed our results and provided requirements and recommendations to facilitate the proposed modifications.

Protected Species Surveys, Glasgow

EP Ecology was commissioned to provide a protected species survey for a project in Glasgow. Their brownfield site was surveyed for evidence of protected and notable species, specifically badgers and otters. Our experienced ecologists identified two active badger setts within woodland which was adjacent to the proposed development site.

In this case, we collated our results and passed these data to our client who was a larger consultancy.

Peat Depth Surveys, Dumfries & Galloway

In Winter 2020, EP Ecology completed a series of peat depth surveys for a larger multi-disciplinary consultancy at an existing wind farm site in Dumfries & Galloway. The data were required to help the end client design cable routes to avoid traversing deep peat.

A total of 86 points were sampled across two days in very rough weather conditions (there’s a reason they built a wind farm there!) Data were then passed to the larger consultancy for reporting and use in design works.
